The drive hunt in Taiji 2014~2015

Live capture of bottlenose dolphins in September

In September, as to the live capture of the bottlenose dolphin, Taiji fishermen are allowed to drive a large pod into a bay/cove as they did before. (In September there is no regulation about the size of the pod that fishermen drive into the bay.) JAZA-member aquaria have the right to buy dolphins from the driven pod, first. Then, three organizations in Taiji, that is, the Taiji Town Development Public Corporation, Dolphin Base, and Dolphin Resort buy dolphins. If dolphins are left unsold, the remaining dolphins are released to the ocean, and are not to be killed for meat. Non JAZA-member aquaria don’t have the right to buy dolphins from the driven pod in September.

Other species in September, including short-finned pilot whales, striped dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, spotted dolphins, false killer whales and Pacific white-sided dolphins can be captured alive from a large pod as before without any change. After the live capture, unsold dolphins are killed for meat.

The way to drive dolphins into the Hatajiri(Hatakejiri) bay is the same as before.

Live capture of bottlenose dolphins from October to the end of February next year

When Taiji Fishing Cooperative intends to sell bottlenose dolphins to JAZA member aquaria, fishermen should drive a small pod into the bay (Hatajiri/Hatakejiri Bay) to avoid abusive capture. There is no regulation about the size of the small pod. Mr. Arai thinks that a small pod means a pod of 20~30 dolphins, but how many dolphins should be in a pod to be called a small pod was not decided, and it is entrusted to fishermen in Taiji. After driving bottlenose dolphins into the bay, the fishermen immediately move the dolphins to a certain place (sea-pen) to keep them, and JAZA member aquaria buy the dolphins first. Then, non-JAZA member aquaria/facilities, which include the Taiji Town Development Public Corporation, Dolphin Base, and Dolphin Resort, buy remained dolphins. After that, if dolphins are still left unsold, they are returned to the ocean, not killed for meat.

When Taiji Fishing Cooperative doesn’t intend to sell bottlenose dolphins to JAZA member aquaria, fishermen can drive a large pod into the bay. After non JAZA member aquaria, including the above three organizations in Taiji, buy the dolphins, remaining dolphins are killed for meat. (JAZA member aquaria don’t have the right to buy them.)

Capture and kill of other species

The hunting season starts on September 1st, and ends in the end of February, next year, but as to dolphins called ‘gondou’ (short-finned pilot whales, Risso’s dolphins, and false killer whales),the hunting season continues until the end of April. All through the hunting season, all species other than the bottlenose dolphin are captured alive in the same way as before without any change. After the live capture, dolphins are killed for meat. However, whether to kill or to release the remained dolphins depends upon the Taiji Fishing Cooperative’s decision.
